Aerodynamics & hydrodynamics

When studying wind aerodynamics and hydrodynamics one looks at the flow of air or liquids around various modes of transport (cars, trucks, busses, aircraft, boats etc.), bridges, buildings, wind turbines, towers, works of art, piping, machines parts, etc. The effect the flow has on the structure is studied. Traditionally this was commonly done in wind tunnel experiments, but the emergence of computers with ever increasing computational power makes it possible to replace these experiments with simulations that will quite often give even more insight. Of course, DEMCON BuNova is also capable of arranging a combination of wind tunnel experiment with simulation. Application areas of wind aerodynamics and hydrodynamics are:

Ventilation in buildings and other spaces in order to control temperature, humidity and smoke evacuation in case of fire, can be a challenging task for a designer. With growing needs for the reduction of energy costs and demands on comfort and safety it is more important than ever to design and build energy efficient, safe, comfortable and sustainably. CFD tools can form a valuable addition to the design process of ventilation systems:

Multiphase flow

Many technical product contain, or have an interaction with multi phase flows. This means a flow that contains a combination of gas, liquid and/or solids in various ratios. This varies from a flow where a small fraction of a different phase is present, to flows where multiple fractions are present in nearly equal fractions.

Simulating multiphase flows can give valuable insight in the hydrodynamic effects, and different transport phenomena that are not attainable by other means. This can, in turn, lead to an improved product design. DEMCON BuNova has the knowledge and expertise to set up advanced multiphase flow simulations. Additionally analytical modelling and measurements can be performed, depending on the nature of the problem. Examples of multiphase problems are:

Rotating flow devices

A specific area where there is a strong interaction between flow and the surrounding solid mechanics, is the area of rotating flow devices. While rotating flow devices, such as pumps, compressors, turbines and turbo’s are commonly applied, design and improvement of these machines is a profession in its own right. DEMCON Bunova has a lot of experience in designing, improving and simulating rotating flow devices. Among others:

A specific sub-area of ventilation technology is ATEX. While correct ventilation and control over air quality is important for comfort, safety or for the processes present, keeping concentrations of flammable and/or explosive gasses under control is often an even more critical challenge. When designing spaces or areas where flammable- or explosive gasses are used, a solid study of the design of, for example, the ventilation system is of critical importance. DEMCON BuNova can play an important role in making such situations safe.
